Birds Of A Feather

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER. New! £67 10.30-4.30 [beginners/ improvers] Any media

Hopefully we will flock together again, as birds are our muse today in all their styles. Do we envy their freedom to fly? Admire their plumage? Or marvel at their endless variations? Whatever draws us to birds, they make an excellent subject.

Whether an accurate watercolour study or an expressive mixed media piece, we will need to consider proportions, shapes and character just as we would in a portrait. Observing and interpreting a bird depending on our style, we can capture these creatures in oh so many ways.  We’ll consider some examples, warm up, then get to creating our own homage to birds whether in a portrait, decorative or abstracted style. Do bring your favourite photos, to add to mine, for inspiration.

Louis Burgess: Definitely Ironically Unnamed Show

Award winning musical comedian and online viral sensation Louis Burgess categorically despises hyped-up, gimmicky marketing blurb. So after he achieved OVER 50 MILLION VIEWS ONLINE, he vowed to never lower himself to such tactics to sell tickets.

This is definitely why perpetual underachiever and professional procrastinator Louis Burgess, AS SEEN ON ITV, decided that, in order to “bring down the system”, his show would be officially, and totally ironically, without a name.

Expect a show that avoids all cheap gimmicks such as meta postmodernism & mentioning his ADHD to appeal to the neurodivergent buzzword culture and instead delivers classic comedy values such as rap songs, contrived hyperactivity, gratuitous profanity and sound effects.

"Yes it's a show about life, fleeting mild fame, music, mental health, frustration, inability to meet deadlines. It's about all of that and more. But mainly it's about literally nothing at all." - Louis Burgess

A Christmas Carol

Being a Ghost Story of Christmas

The award-winning Dyad Productions, (A Room of One’s Own, I, Elizabeth, Austen’s Women, Female Gothic) who have toured their sell-out festive show Christmas Gothic since 2015, now bring their magic to Dickens’ classic and perennially relevant ghost story.

It’s Christmas Eve, and the miserly misanthrope, Ebenezer Scrooge, is about to have a ghostly night he’ll never forget.  Dickens’ festive, immortal tale of redemption and compassion is brought to life in Dyad’s inimitable solo style.

Draw near for an evening of mistletoe and merriment in the company of Marley, Fezziwig, and Cratchit et al to discover the true meaning of Christmas: tenderness for the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future.

Ebenezer lives in us all, and this glorious tale reminds us how not to give in to the Scrooge within.

Taking inspiration from Dickens’ original performances of his own work and utilising the brilliant narrator of the novel to bring the story to life, this solo piece is performed by Andrew Margerison (Frantic Assembly’s Fatherland, Macbeth), and directed by Rebecca Vaughan.

It combines classical Indian dance with contemporary movement, theatre and play, sharing with audiences a world full of colour, invention and flow. The journey starts with the audience getting a special choogh choogh ticket. Three artists weave a traveling tapestry with three scarves, morphing from one scene to the next as the sights, sounds and smells whiz by. The sound scape is rich with the sounds of the train, hawkers, festivals, musicians, ambient sounds of river, jungles and cities. The artists sing songs which are specially written for children – Chai Chai, Coffee Coffee and Kites Kites everywhere. They interact with the audience, engaging their imagination. Herjira (Live on Stage)

Herjira

Hejira are a seven-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late 1970s. Having released the albums The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter and Mingus (regarded as her ‘jazz period’), Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Pastorius and Alias).

The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, Shadows And Light; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band are fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has - in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue, such as Amelia, Woodstock, A Case Of You, Song For Sharon, Edith And The Kingpin etc.!

BALLET TO BROADWAY: WHEELDON WORKS

[Mixed Programme; 1 Revival, 3 New Productions)

Sensuous contemporary ballet meets the energy of musical theatre in four distinctive short works.

Fool’s Paradise, The Two of Us, Us, An American in Paris: four works showing the remarkable choreographic range of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate, Christopher Wheeldon.

FOOL’S PARADISE

Luminescent and shimmering, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

THE TWO OF US

The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

US (DUET)

Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson’s music.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)

The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was

Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.
