Beginners Portuguese - Term 1

Beginners Portuguese - Term 1

Beginners Portuguese Course. Term 1

Monday 12th January 4.45pm to 5.45pm

5 Weeks.

£50.00

In Term 1, students will build a friendly foundation in Portuguese, focusing on everyday communication. We begin by learning how to introduce ourselves, use personal pronouns, and understand the verb ser (to be). Students will also discover the difference between formal and informal greetings in Portugal, helping them feel confident in real-life social situations.

As the term progresses, learners explore essential verbs such as ser, estar, and morar, which allow them to describe who they are, how they are feeling, and where they live. Simple location words like aqui and aí help students talk about where things and people are. We then move into the present tense, alongside useful everyday words such as how, when, this, and that, making conversations more natural and practical.

Later lessons focus on talking about family and belongings using possessives, as well as learning vocabulary for days, months, and seasons. Students also learn how to use the plural, and common verbs like andar and ficar. The term finishes with a fun and practical activity: telling the time, bringing together grammar and vocabulary in a real-world context.

You will need to purchase the 'Portuguese in 3 Months' book available here.

Meet your tutor Mariafrancesca Greca:

I am a multilingual educator currently teaching Italian at Exeter University, with a rich and varied background in teaching, administration, tourism, and customer service. I hold a Master’s degree in International Tourism Management from Leeds Beckett University and a degree in Political Sciences from the University of Naples “Orientale.”

My passion for languages and culture has shaped both my studies and my life. I studied Portuguese at university in Naples and later lived and worked in Portugal across different cities and contexts. Portugal remains close to me not only through these experiences but also because of my husband’s family, whom we visit often.

Over the years, I have volunteered in schools and community centres, preparing language clubs, assisting teachers, and teaching Italian and Portuguese. These opportunities have allowed me to share my love of languages while supporting learners of all ages.

I now live in Teignmouth with my husband, our daughter, and our dog Betty.
