Beginners Italian Evening Course - Term 1

Beginners Italian Evening Course - Term 1

Beginners Italian Evening Course. Term 1

Monday 12th January 6pm to 7pm

5 Weeks.

£50.00

In Term 1, students begin their Italian journey by learning how to communicate in everyday, meaningful situations. They start with greetings and introductions, discovering how to say who they are, where they’re from, and how to use the verbs chiamarsi and essere. Through role-plays, students practise introducing themselves while also exploring an important cultural theme: when Italians use formal or informal greetings.

As the term progresses, the focus shifts to food and personal preferences. Students learn how to express likes and dislikes using piacere and preferire, building confidence through practical activities such as talking about favourite foods and ordering coffee the Italian way. They then expand this knowledge with numbers, shopping language, and useful verbs like volere and comprare, culminating in lively market-style role-plays.

Towards the end of the term, students develop their descriptive and storytelling skills. They learn how to point things out using demonstratives, describe objects with adjectives, and talk about time.

Finally, they are introduced to the passato prossimo, enabling them to talk about past events. By sharing stories about their weekend and interviewing classmates, students finish Term 1 able to communicate simply, confidently, and with a growing understanding of Italian culture.

Meet your tutor Mariafrancesca Greca:

I am a multilingual educator currently teaching Italian at Exeter University, with a rich and varied background in teaching, administration, tourism, and customer service. I hold a Master’s degree in International Tourism Management from Leeds Beckett University and a degree in Political Sciences from the University of Naples “Orientale.”

My passion for languages and culture has shaped both my studies and my life. I studied Portuguese at university in Naples and later lived and worked in Portugal across different cities and contexts. Portugal remains close to me not only through these experiences but also because of my husband’s family, whom we visit often.

Over the years, I have volunteered in schools and community centres, preparing language clubs, assisting teachers, and teaching Italian and Portuguese. These opportunities have allowed me to share my love of languages while supporting learners of all ages.

I now live in Teignmouth with my husband, our daughter, and our dog Betty.
