Meet your tutor, Deborah:
My name is Deborah, and I come from Madrid, the vibrant capital of Spain. I was born in Santiago de Compostela, the city famous for marking both the beginning and the end of the “Camino de Santiago.”
After completing my teaching qualification, I chose to move to England in September 2006 to truly master the language and immerse myself in the culture.
I’ve always been fascinated by languages—their structure, their history, and the way they allow us to connect with others on a deeper level. Understanding a language opens the door to understanding people, and that has always inspired me.
Over the years, I’ve taught in schools, delivered Spanish classes, and offered private tutoring. I now dedicate myself to working full-time as a Spanish tutor, helping learners develop their skills and encouraging them to explore and appreciate Spanish and Latin culture.

A History of Art from c1850 – c1960.
Tuesday 15th September - 7pm – 9pm
£80.50 (including 50p booking fee).
A 6 week overview of the major art movements and key artists (and some lesser known names!) in Europe and America from around 1850 to around 1960.
Find out how the Impressionists got their name and how Van Goch and Gaugin reinvented art. Get an insight into the fractured surfaces of the Cubists and how the Dada group enraged audiences at their club, the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich. Find out how dreams and the subconscious influenced the Surrealists and how modern warfare impacted on art and artists. Dip into the ‘pure painting’ of the new American rebels, the Abstract Expressionists and find out how Pollock created his huge canvases. Witness how British artists captured the vibrancy of popular post-war culture and how Warhol recreated the ‘American Dream’ with his silk screen prints and avant garde films.
Everyone is welcome! It doesn’t matter if you don’t know much about art history or if you have some knowledge already, this course is a chance to get a good overview of the period in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Discussion and interpretation of the art and artists featured is very much encouraged, but equally, if you are content to take it all in and learn more about what inspired the great artists of the modern era, then this course offers an informal and open approach to around 100 years of art history that changed the way we view art for ever!
Price £80.50 for the 5 week course (including 50p booking fee).
Tutor: Steve Roberts – Biography
I graduated with a BA Hons in History of Art, Architecture and Design (2:1) in 1997, I have a PGCE (FE) with Keele University (1999), and gained a Masters Degree in Media and Cultural Studies with The Open University in 2009.

I also taught Film, Media and Contextual Studies at Joseph Chamberlain and Birmingham Metropolitan Colleges in Birmingham between 2004 and 2013.
I have a broad knowledge and understanding of art historical periods , movements, artists and theory and also in film and media history and theory. I like to mix these together and throw in some popular culture/music history/literature for good measure!

In an era of great change and great beauty emerged the character of James McNeill Whistler. Considered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th century art, he was a contemporary of the Impressionists, much admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Boldly experimental and famously witty, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in the history of great art. He found a parallel between painting and music, and entitled many of his paintings, “arrangements”, “harmonies” and “nocturnes”, emphasizing the importance of tonal harmony in his work.
His most famous painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), commonly known as Whistler’s Mother, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history and this film will unveil the artist behind the art.
Tate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. This blockbuster exhibition promises to reawaken the world to just how important Whistler is to art history, uniting world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works. Exhibition on Screen will bring these stunning works and the incredible story behind them to cinemas around the world while the exhibition is still running, bringing this truly global artist to a global audience. This will be an unmissable chance to get to know this visually spectacular artist and the influence he has had on those who followed.
Made in close collaboration with Tate Britain. Directed by David Bickerstaff.
Documentary. 90 mins.

Beginners to improvers. [black ink/other]
£39.50 (including 50p booking fee)
This is a first! We are going to make an easy ink tool out of soft metal [provided] and marvel at the shapely bold and fine lines it can instantly create.
Going bold might lead us to Japanese influence or to a modern stunning landscape. We can leave lines or soften with a brush, you may want to add a surprising pop of colour too, to set the seal on the unique marks your special tool will make. It can be adapted for different subjects and preferred styles. It is also an excellent way to start bold before adding other media.
We’ll do lots of practice sheets [photocopy paper is fine] before you transfer your skill to finished pieces. This will be a fun, extended morning workshop with the satisfaction that your tool is unique, therefore so is your art!
We have small groups in an airy, spacious studio next to the sea with in-house café, whats not to love?! Liana is known for her warm welcome, clear demonstrations & teaching steps, encouraging confidence and fun risk taking.

'Emmeline Pankhurst - Angel or Anarchist?'
Performed by Liz Grand
Written and directed by Chris Jaeger
Emmeline Pankhurst is one of the most influential and well-known British women to have ever lived. She fought tirelessly for women to have the vote.
She was imprisoned several times, and went on hunger strike many times.
Having failed to make any impression on parliamentarians for nearly thirty
years, she became an advocate of Direct Action. The suffragettes threw stones
at politicians, set fire to letter boxes, torched buildings and chained themselves
to railings. Although the Suffragettes were eventually successful, many brave
women suffered terribly during the fight. Emmeline was not universally
popular. Many women believed that if the suffragettes had been less
confrontational, the vote for women might have come much quicker.
Includes a Q&A after the performance
£19.50 (including 50p booking fee)

"Life can't just be the humdrum, the mundane and the routine before the inevitable slide of disease, decay and death. Why can't we sneak in a bit of awesome, a tad of amazing and maybe a smidge of wonderful?" A forest canopy opening onto a huge vista would be enchanting for some but Ian's ancestors wondered the desert for forty years, they've been outdoors enough.
Others get their fix from the spiritual but Ian's been harbouring a grudge against God since his mother stopped him going to Arsenal after his Barmitzvah. Forty-nine years ago. 'God will be watching' she said. Well, at least he got to see the game. The point is, life could be so much better so Ian's on the lookout. Come and join him on the hunt.
Ian Stone is a hugely experienced broadcaster, podcaster and writer and a brilliantly funny comedian. He performs at major comedy festivals and venues globally. His popular posts and reels on social media have quickly earned him a following of over 60k across BlueSky, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, amassing millions of views.
Aside from stand-up comedy, Ian co-hosted the award-winning Rock 'N' Roll Football show on Absolute Radio for five years with Ian Wright. He currently presents a very popular (50k downloads per episode), twice-weekly Arsenal podcast, Handbrake Off, for The Athletic. A live version of the podcast recently sold out Leicester Square Theatre in London. Ian is also a regular contributor on Times Radio. His book To Be Someone was published in 2020 and has received nearly 500 four- and five-star reviews on Amazon.

Synopsis:
In the seedy underbelly of 18th-century Paris, money is king. Nothing is sacred – even love itself can be bought for the right price. A native of this hedonistic underworld, Manon is caught between twin desires when she falls in love with the student Des Grieux. Steadfast and devoted, he offers the possibility of an honourable life. Yet, the riches promised by the world of Parisian society remain tempting...
Manon’s inner turmoil and struggle for survival lie at the devastating heart of Kenneth MacMillan’s 1974 adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s novel. In this signature work of The Royal Ballet, MacMillan’s nuanced understanding of human psychology makes for an unflinching look into the moral degradation of Manon’s Paris, while all its decadence and decay are brought to life through Jules Massenet’s score and Nicholas Georgiadis’s designs.

THE GOOSEBUMPS OF DELIGHT!
Adapted & directed by Gavin Robertson
Performed by Nicholas Collett
A sequel to THE GHOST OF A SMILE, and spookily apt as Halloween draws near, two (more) of Charles Dickens’ ghost stories, but with a comic element- adapted from his original stories ‘The Baron of Grogzwig’ – in which a downhearted Noble is visited by a Demon, and ‘The Goblins Who Stole A Sexton’ – the latter being Dickens’ own inspiration for what later became A CHRISTMAS CAROL!
The themes of redemption and humility are all there – but funnier!

The Gigspanner Big Band are a unique force in British folk music...
Their high-energy, virtuosic performances appeal equally to traditionalists and to those looking for something more experimental, and they have garnered praise from publications as varied as fRoots, The Telegraph and The Wire, where they were described as ‘melodically folk-rooted yet open and innovative beyond the constraints of genre’
Beginning life as a trio - with legendary Steeleye Span fiddle player Peter Knight being joined by percussionist Sacha Trochet and guitarist Roger Flack - the line-up has been expanded to form the Gigspanner Big Band, with acclaimed multi-instrumental duo Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin - BBC Folk Awards 'Best Duo') and Bellowhead co-founder and melodeon player extraordinaire, John Spiers, joining the fray.
While Peter Knight, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today, John Spiers, has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades.
2025 was a highlight year for the Band, marked by the release of their album Turnstone, which was nominated for the inaugural Folk Album of the Year 2025 Awards, and featured in several ‘Album of the Year’ listings, including esteemed music journal SONGLINES.
Characterised by riotous inventiveness, technically gifted individual playing and subtle collaborative interaction, this coming together of several of the biggest names on the folk-roots scene, combines a deep knowledge of roots traditions with a ceaselessly boundary pushing approach.

Local Authors
An opportunity to hear from a panel of successful authors, all based in Devon or Cornwall, who will be speaking about the following books:
Eva Glyn – ‘The Dubrovnik Book Club’ and ‘The Croation Island Library’
Stephanie Austin – ‘A Dartmoor Christmas Card Murder’
Victoria Dowd – ‘Threefold Death’
Jonathan Posner – ‘The Broken Sword’
The Panel will take place in our main auditorium and will be moderated by Cathy Dodd.
About the Authors:
Eva Glyn
Eva Glyn’s novels are inspired by the places she loves to travel to and her fascination with local culture and history.
In 2019 a holiday changed her writing life when a tour guide shared his heartbreaking yet ultimately uplifting story of growing up in Mostar during the war in the 1990s. This became The Olive Grove and since then she has written a further six novels for Harper Collins imprint One More Chapter, including The Dubrovnik Book Club, and two Second World War dual timelines set in Croatia.
Although she considers herself Welsh, Eva lives in the South West of England and, as well as travel enjoys walking, wine and indulging her passion for history.
Stephanie Austin
Stephanie Austin is the author of the best-selling Devon Mystery Series, published by Allison and Busby, a series of contemporary crime novels set in the Dartmoor town of Ashburton and featuring reluctant amateur sleuth and antique shop owner, Juno Browne.
Stephanie lives in Devon and had a varied career as a teacher, artist and antiques trader before becoming a writer, and has a long history as an actor and director in amateur theatre. When not writing she likes to garden and cook.
The latest book in the series, ‘How to get Murdered in Devon’, is now out in paperback. ‘A Dartmoor Christmas Card Murder’ comes out in November.
Victoria Dowd
Victoria is the award-winning author of the bestselling Smart Woman’s Mystery series and has been shortlisted for the CWA Dagger. Her novel, The Smart Woman’s Guide to Murder, won The People’s Book Prize for fiction and was In Search of the Classic Mystery Novel’s Book of the Year. She was awarded the Gothic Fiction prize.
Victoria is the Vice Chair of the Crime Writers’ Association and was a criminal defence barrister.
The latest novel in her historical crime series is Threefold Death. Her standalone novel, The New Rules of Murder, will be published by Sphere in June next year.
Jonathan Posner
Jonathan has been an avid reader of fiction ever since he was old enough to own a torch. As a schoolboy he virtually lived in Narnia, and as he got older, he got into historical fiction – particularly Phillipa Gregory, Susan Kay, C J Sansom and the Flashman Papers.
He loves creative writing, and has written the book and lyrics for three full-scale Musicals, all of which have been performed by community or professional casts. In 2015 he upcycled the plot of one of the Musicals into The Witchfinder’s Well, a full-length Elizabethan action and adventure novel. Since then, he has written and published a further six novels and two books of short stories/articles. His latest book, The Assassin’s Revenge, is due out in 2027.
Jonathan is a member of the Society of Authors and the Alliance of Independent Authors.

Author Panel: Another Time, Another Place
A chance to hear from a group of successful authors about their latest novels from an eclectic range of genres including wartime sagas, historical fiction, crime, and speculative thrillers.
Authors on this panel, with the title of their latest novel, are:
Kirsten Hesketh writing as Kirsty Dougal – ‘The Poppy Factory’
Louise Fein – ‘The Book of Forbidden Words’
Simon McCleave – ‘The Liverpool Killings’
Eve Smith – ‘The Cure’
The Panel will take place in our main auditorium – moderator to be confirmed
About the Authors:
Kirsten Hesketh writing as Kirsty Dougal
Kirsten Hesketh writes wartime sagas as Kirsty Dougal for Penguin and as Poppy Cooper for Hodder, including The Poppy Girls, Wartime on Sanctuary Lane and The Post Office Girls – as well as contemporary fiction under her own name. She loves writing about ordinary people living through extraordinary times, drawing inspiration from the family stories she grew up with: her father being blown off his bicycle by a bomb blast on his way to sit his exams, her uncle’s memories of joining the VE Day celebrations on The Mall in London.
Before becoming an author, Kirsten ran her own qualitative research consultancy. Over the past 30 years, she has interviewed the Great British public on everything from Rolos to razors, developing a lifelong fascination with the stories people tell about their lives.
Alongside her writing, Kirsten is currently studying for a PhD at Oxford Brookes University, researching how women’s stories of the world wars live on in family memories, literature and popular culture. She is also a keen amateur archaeologist and spends many weekends getting muddy on local digs.
Married with a son and daughter, Kirsten lives in Oxfordshire, enjoys walking, and is a staunch supporter of Wycombe Wanderers – especially when they are winning!
Louise Fein
Louise writes historical fiction, focussed around unheard voices or from unusual perspectives. Her novels have variously won and been shortlisted for literary awards, international best sellers, and translated into multiple foreign languages. Louise holds an MA in Creative Writing from St Mary’s University. Equally passionate about historical research and writing, she loves to look for themes which have resonance with today’s world.
Simon McCleave
Simon McCleave is a multimillion-selling crime novelist who lives in North Wales with his wife and children. His debut novel, The Snowdonia Killings, was a #1 Amazon Bestseller and sold over 400,000 copies. The subsequent books in the DI Ruth Hunter series have all been bestsellers and have collectively sold over 3 million copies.
In 2025 McCleave launched a brand-new series Marshal of Snowdonia featuring Frank Marshal, a retired police officer and now ranger in Snowdonia National Park. The books, which are also bestsellers, are now in audio from Simon & Schuster.
Before writing novels, Simon worked in film and television at the BBC, Channel 4 and in LA. He was a scriptwriter on some of the UK’s best-loved series including Eastenders, Silent Witness, Teachers, Midsomer Murders and The Bill. He wrote over 40 scripts for the iconic series, widely regarded as having redefined the police procedural on British television.
Eve Smith
Eve Smith writes speculative thrillers about the things that scare her. Her novels have been reviewed in New Scientist, The Guardian and The Times. Her fourth book, The Cure, was a Times best new thriller pick which explores the lethal consequences of a cure for ageing. Eve’s previous job took her to research projects across the globe which fuelled her passion for wild creatures, radical science and far-flung places.

Cally Beaton: Namaste Motherf*ckers
*Now a Sunday Times best seller*
Namaste Motherf*ckers is the new show from Cally Beaton (QI, Live at the Apollo) - a quick-witted, unexpected and unapologetic insight into life in midlife. Combining Cally’s comedic and storytelling prowess with extracts from her provocative, stereotype-busting book of the same name, the show has at its heart her own story of radical reinvention – taking her from meetings in boardrooms to treading the boards, thanks to a chance conversation with the late, great Joan Rivers. A funny show about a deadly serious subject, Namaste Motherf*ckers is a celebration of and for the female of the species. Invisible no more. The show celebrated an Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025 sell-out, and it will include a Q&A and meet-and-greet with Cally (who knows, Jeff the wonder dog may even be there too).
'Sprightly wit and considerable storytelling prowess', 4**** The Scotsman
'Original and clever', 4**** The Arts Desk – pick of the Edinburgh Fringe
'Gripping, perceptive and uplifting', Chortle
'Exciting and hilarious talent…she’s got it', Time Out

A fascinating and humorous evening, acclaimed by both regular theatre patrons and outdoor enthusiasts alike!
On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book ‘Touching The Void’, later film and stage play, both climbers became household names.
It was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering - but not Simon. Over 35 years later, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited.
Come along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama, excitement and beauty of modern, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs.
“Simon is a totally engaging speaker, who both entertains and inspires.”

NEW! Impressionist Favourite Florals. Discover Meanings, Create a Gift Bouquet.
Wednesday 25th November - 10.30 to 4.30pm
Beginners to improvers [ inks/wcols/acrylics]
£68.50 (including 50p booking fee)
Working mainly in an impressionistic, wet in wet style we’ll create charming bouquets based on meaningful flowers to charm your loved ones as a card or painting or in homage to someone passed. Beginners can keep it simple with individual flowers or the more adventurous can create a composition of several in an attractive bouquet.
Bring a photo or two of your favourites [ Liana will always have her inspiration file] and we’ll try to discover their meaning. The Victorians were very good at this and chose their bouquets with secret meanings within!
With a demo of how to create a composition, easy backgrounds and the ‘rules’ to make a bouquet balanced, we’ll learn about the different brushes that help and the need to let light in. Our style will be loose and impressionistic rather than botanical as we seek to retain the freshness and exuberance of flowers. Further we seek to create the pleasure that a bouquet can bring, this one will last long after flowers fade and make a smashing Xmas or birthday present.
[Liana privately offers bespoke painted bouquets or 1 to 1 sessions to create a Spiritual Bouquet that is dedicated and ‘sent’ onto a loved one. Please enquire at box office for contact details]
We have small groups in an airy, spacious studio next to the sea with in-house café, whats not to love?! ;-] Liana is known for her warm welcome, clear demonstrations & teaching steps and encouraging confidence and fun risk taking.
All students are invited to her free Artist’s Circle for further learning and community.

Synopsis:
Spurred on by a bet, two young men hatch a plan to test the fidelity of their girlfriends. What follows is a slippery game of seduction and power, the four lovers plunging into a dizzying world of shifting reality, where truth becomes increasingly unstable.
Così fan tutte has lost none of its sting since it first scandalised audiences in 1790. In her Main Stage debut, Netia Jones, Associate Director of The Royal Opera, reimagines Mozart’s comedy of manners through a sharp contemporary lens, where 18th-century romantic trickery meets deeply satirical high-tech deceit. Taking on the roles of the lovers is an exciting young cast led by Louise Alder, Simone McIntosh, Mingjie Lei and Huw Montague Rendall, with Gerald Finley as their manipulative game-master Don Alfonso and Emily Pogorelc as Despina. Thomas Hengelbrock conducts, bringing out the exquisite melodies that underpin the provocative, and resolutely modern, themes at the heart of the opera.

Now hear this, y’all…
Rumour has it the Wilbury brothers wuz plyin’ their trade one night in Tootsie’s Bar, Nashville, when they spotted George Harrison from The Beatles and his pal, Jeff Lynne outta the ELO in the crowd. Seems George & Jeff wuz lovin’ the show cuz they called up some friends to come along. Them friends wuz Roy Orbison, Tom Petty outta The Heartbreakers, and that Bobby Dylan himself.
After a night partyin’ n’ drinkin’, the boys allegedly decided they should all work together. Six months on, the Wilburys had heard nuthin’. Then it seems they heard their own music comin’ out of a record store. It wuz a new supergroup, callin’ ‘emselves The Traveling Wilburys.
Yes folks, it seems the Traveling Wilburys became a tribute band to our home-spun originals! After a lot of years, The Unravelling Wilburys decided to ‘reclaim’ their songs, puttin’ together a set of all the hits and the best stuff Dylan, Petty, Orbison, Lynne and Harrison could muster between ‘em.
Then they headed for the UK, where the folks ain’t got much of a clue about Country music and took to ‘em right away. They’ve been here ever since.
With a perfect mix of superb musicianship and comedy, the UNRAVELLING WILBURYS are brothers ‘Sticky’ Willy, Walter, Thumper, Blind Melon and Honky Tonk, who tell their unique story on how they became a tribute band. Now so popular that they even got to be a question on that TV show “The Chase”, the boys get to spend their time travelling all over the UK, from the Orkney Islands to the Isle of Wight; from Penzance to Perth; from Southwold to South Wales; getting rave reviews and
packing out theatres along the way in towns whose names they’ve never heard of and can’t pronounce.
The show features the best of the Wilbury albums (‘Handle With Care’; ‘The End of The Line’; ‘The Devil’s Been Busy’; ‘Tweeter & The Monkeyman’) and some of their supposedly thievin’ counterparts’ numbers like ‘Refugee’; ‘While my Guitar Gently Weeps’; ‘Like a Rollin Stone’; ‘Only the Lonely’ and ‘Mr. Blue Sky’. The act also contains the kind of comedy only a band spending far too many nights in Travelodge hotels could dream up.
So- turn off your hearing aid, put your Zimmer frame to one side and prepare for a great night out. It’s a journey you ain’t gonna forget in a hurry!

The Tannahill Weavers are one of Scotland's premier traditional bands. Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. These versatile musicians have received worldwide accolades consistently over the years for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can't get better...yet continue to do just that.
The Tannahills have turned their acoustic excitement loose on audiences with an electrifying effect. They have that unique combination of traditional melodies, driving rhythmic accompaniment, and rich vocals that make their performances unforgettable. As the Winnipeg Free Press noted, "The Tannahill Weavers - properly harnessed - could probably power an entire city for a year on the strength of last night's concert alone. The music may be old time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll."
The Tannahill Weavers began to attract attention when founding members Roy Gullane and Phil Smillie added the full-sized highland bagpipes to the on-stage presentations, the first professional Scottish folk group to successfully do so. The combination of the powerful pipe solos, Roy's driving guitar backing and lead vocals, and Phil's ethereal flute playing breathed new life into Scotland's vast repertoire of traditional melodies and songs.
As they approach their 58th anniversary, the Tannahill Weavers are firmly established as one of the premier groups on the concert stage. From reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits

Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive, sophisticated choreography. Prokofiev’s evocative music sets the scene for stolen romantic moments and deadly feuds and sweeps the ballet towards its inevitable and tragic conclusion.
