The Business of Self-Publishing
Workshop with Writer Elizabeth Dulcie
Saturday 7th November 2026
12.30pm to 1.30pm
Self-publishing has moved from being the option of last resort, spurned by many in the literary world to a legitimate route to publishing, sitting alongside traditional and hybrid models. If done correctly, there should be no difference in the finished product: a well-written and fully edited work, with professional layout and cover design. The difference lies in who has responsibility for ensuring that each stage is carried out effectively. And in the case of a self-published book, it is essential that the author takes a business approach to the decisions required at each stage.
This workshop will provide a short overview of these two main aspects:
Publishing Options
An overview of the different approaches available to authors wishing to have their book published. Pros and Cons of each approach. Why self-publishing is a legitimate option.
Self-Publishing Decision Tree
Having made the decision to self-publish, there are a number of decisions that need to be taken, depending on the individual circumstances of the author and the book. And every project will be different, so there are no right answers. A structured process is presented, with the questions that need to be asked at each step.
The outcome of the workshop would be a decision-making process that the author can use for each separate project, based on a business approach. A handout will be provided too.
About Elizabeth Dulcie is the author of The Business of Writing, a series of books on the topics covered by this workshop. Part 4 of the series deals specifically with Self-Publishing. You can find details of the whole series on her website.
